Population structure and microhabitat preference of a threatened freshwater mussel, Westralunio carteri, in south-western Australia

چکیده
Abstract Freshwater mussels are important functional components of aquatic ecosystems. Westralunio carteri is a threatened freshwater mussel species, endemic to south-western Australia, which has suffered recent, dramatic decline in range. The density, size structure and distribution adult this species within river reaches were investigated using quadrat searches modelled against range microhabitat factors. Mussels found from 26 sites 14 different rivers at mean density 28.4 ± 2.3 individuals m ?2 . W. was highly aggregated reaches. most factors explaining substrate grain size, debris distance the riverbank, with finer substrate, presence woody proximity riverbank associated greater abundance mussels. In all where found, populations appeared be actively recruiting. However, no six sites, despite them having been recorded as present last 20 years, suggests that still decline. identification requirements for will assist identifying suitable release translocation and/or captive propagation, may required prevent extinction species.

Age and growth in the Australian freshwater mussel, Westralunio carteri, with an evaluation of the fluorochrome calcein for validating the assumption of annulus formation
Growth and longevity of freshwater mussels (Unionida) are important for defining life-history strategies and assessing vulnerability to human impacts. We used mark–recapture and analysis of shell rings to investigate age and growth of the hyriid, Westralunio carteri, at 5 sites in southwestern Australia. We tested the utility of the in situ marker calcein for validating the assumption of annulu...
متن کاملParasites of Native and Exotic Freshwater Fishes in the South West of Western Australia
Fewer than 200 fish species are found in freshwater habitats in Australia, of which 144 are confined exclusively to freshwater. At least 22 species of exotic freshwater fish have been introduced into Australia, and 19 of these have established selfsustaining populations. However, the parasite fauna of both native and exotic freshwater fishes in Australia is poorly known. This is particularly th...
متن کاملDistribution of Westralunio carteri Iredale 1934 (Bivalvia: Unionoida: Hyriidae) on the south coast of southwestern Australia, including new records of the species
Westralunio carteri Iredale 1934 is the only hyriid in southwestern Australia. The species was listed as ‘Vulnerable’ by the IUCN, due to population decline from dryland salinity, although the listing was recently changed to ‘Least Concern’. The Department of Environment and Conservation lists the species as ‘Priority 4’, yet it lacks special protection under federal or state legislation. Accur...
متن کاملMicrosatellite analysis of genetic diversity and population structure of freshwater mussel (Lamprotula leai).
Lamprotula leai is one of the most commercially important freshwater pearl mussels in China, but there is limited data on its genetic diversity and population structure. In the present study, 119 individuals from four major geographical populations were investigated using 15 microsatellite loci identified via cross-species amplification. A total of 114 alleles were detected, with an average of ...
متن کاملMolecular markers for genetic diversity, gene flow and genetic population structure of freshwater mussel species
Freshwater mussel species are in global decline. Anthropogenic changes of river channels and the decrease of autochthonous fish population, the natural hosts of mussels larval stages (glochidia), are the main causes. Therefore, the conservation of mussel species depends not only on habitat conservation, but also on the availability of the fish host. In Portugal, information concerning most of t...
